Whether a hormone acts locally (only where you place it) or systemically (on your whole body) depends on the concentration and dose. β
Higher doses of hormone can act systemically, even if given vaginally. Lower doses, like what we use with low dose vaginal estrogen for GSM (or low dose vaginal estrogen for the face) act primarily where they're applied. π But, even a low dose vaginal estradiol (ex 0.01% = 0.1mg/gm) can act systemically if you apply enough. For example, if you apply 3 g to your vagina and another 5 g to your face, neck and chest, you're getting 0.8 mg of estradial, which is similar to the dose we'd use in a 1 mg/gm estradial (systemic) cream. β οΈ Yes, it's complicated. And, fyi... The dosing for patches, sprays, gels, rings, est is completely different from the dosing of creams. π©π©π©
