When it comes to muscle growth, we want to choose movements that provide a high degree of stability and bracing (if we have the option to do so). These movements will be MOST optimal for muscle growth. This doesn't mean that movements that require more internal stabilization won't cause muscle growth, it's just not AS effective because you're now recruiting other muscles to work to stabilize. This means less motor unit recruitment going towards your targeted muscle. If you don’t have access to a good hip thrust machine, you can do hip thrusts on a slanted smith machine (the straight one doesn’t accommodate the arcing motion of movement), or a glute bridge on a straight one. Most hip abduction machines don’t recline, so this is what you can do to make the movement more shelf focused. Rather than sitting down (hip flexion) on this machine (which is going to primarily be piriformis and other deep external rotators), bring your butt off of the pad and extend hips towards ceiling (similar to how your hips would be positioned at the top of a thrust or bridge) because hip extension + abduction is going to be more glute medius + glute minimus. This is important 👇🏻 If you’re not incorporating any rotational work into your lower body days, this is a good place to start! This movement specifically is a client favorite! A lot of my clients report feeling the most glute here out of any RDL variation. Why is it so good? 👉🏻The kickstand stance is usually an easier stance to nail down a hip hinge 👉🏻The glute med gets involved more to stabilize the pelvis during rotation 👉🏻Mimics how we move in normal life- WE ROTATE! 👉🏻Enhances hip mobility 👉🏻Improves hip stability 👉🏻It’s also great to get in a lot of stimulus under relatively lighter loads compared to a bilateral stance RDL (good for those with injuries)  **Although you can do this with a DB or KB, I’m a BIG fan of doing it with a Landmine! You can get more range of motion and it forces you into rotation due to the fixed position on the barbell. Like I’ve mentioned before, a good program should have you moving in all planes of motion.
