1 QUALITY HARD working set will always be better than a million sets with low effort.   Now this doesn’t mean you can do a thousand “quality” working sets within an exercise.   Why?   Because now we have to think recovery.  Think about yourself as a bank.  You have a limited amount of money you can spend.  And when you spend a shitton of money on a certain thing, it will take time for that money to replenish back.  The replenishing back factor being your recovery. When you don’t allow yourself to recover, progressions will not take place.  You won’t become stronger, you won’t become bigger.  Going back to the bank analogy.  You spend all your money, and any time a given amount of money comes back, you spend it all again.  How can you expect to afford that big expenisve thing you’re trying to  purchase?  You can’t.  Becasue your money keeps getting depleted.   Hence why when you’re recovered, and fresh, those intial working sets where you’re stronger and in a lot more of a primed position to SPEND, is where the high quality takes place. This is a default approach you can do if you don’t know where to begin!  Roll with it, and see how progress reflects.  Adjust accordingly IF NEED BE.  If you’re progressively getting stronger with quality execution, then you’re on the right path.  BUT you will need to keep your FOOD and RECOVERY in check to maximize results. Mechanical tension, the driver for muscle growth.  When does it take place within the set?  Is it really complicated?   No.   It’s not.   Mechanical tension takes place simply when those last reps that you have to fight for (Generally those last 5 reps.  If you do a 4 reps set, or a 3 it is okay.  Though for many I wouldn’t recommend a set of 3 reps because many of these damn kids will have the most atrocious form of “3 reps” with too much weight they can handle at that point having shit quality reps just for the sake of more weight.  I’d recommend for most AT LEAST ME PERSONALLY to do the rep ranges of 5-10.  Again I’m not saying 4 won’t work it’s just my recommendation.  I’m not speaking like you HAVE TO DO THAT!  Before some Neanderthal misinterprets what I say. To sum it up.  Fight for those last reps WITH CONTROLLED AGGRESSION AND QUALITY!   Over time, if your nutrition is locked in, and your recovery is locked in, a pattern of strength increases WITH THE SAME GOOD FORM should be taking place.   BUT, as you get stronger, don’t expect your strength to constantly go up.  It’s the name of the game.  The bigger and stronger you become, the slower the progress will be.
