When you are in a highly abducted and externally rotated position, your adductors (inner thighs) have the greatest leverage to extend the hip. Sumo deadlift isnโ€™t zero glutes, itโ€™s just not the best deadlift variation for glute growth. It's actually a closer (hip-width) stance that allows the glutes to be loaded way better due to the fact that it gets the glute lengthened (stretched) and allows it to use the pelvis as leverage to work off of. Thrusting inward and squeezing your glutes as hard as you can at the top of an RDL is not more glutes. There's nothing for the glutes to contract against. You're just squeezing your cheeks and going into lumbar extension. A single leg press and a Bulgarian split squat are two effective exercises for glute growth, but not the same. A Bulgarian split squat (when you are not holding onto something to make it more stable) requires more internal stabilization, which means the glute medius will work to stabilize the pelvis. The glute medius does the stability work while the glute max is doing the dynamic work here. In contrast, a single leg press is going to be glute max due to the stability offered up by this machine, therefore the glute medius does not have to work to stabilize. Both exercises are valuable additions to a training program, but they serve different purposes. By understanding the nuances of each exercise, you can optimize your training for better results. BARBELL The barbell isn't a bad choice, but some people complain they can never feel their glutes in the RDL and always feel it in their low back. The erectors are synergists to the glutes in hip extension and have to stabilize the spine, so there is no way to "eliminate" the erectors from being involved in any RDL variation. Their contributing can be minimized by keeping a neutral spine, and not looking up and not "arching" (extending) the spine because this activates the erectors even more. The barbell is also held in a position where the external moment arm is further from the hips but also the spine, and for some people this just never "feels" like glutes. If that is you, then the following option might be better. A pro of the barbell is that it can be loaded well. DUMBBELLS The dumbbells put you in more of a natural shoulder position compared to a barbell. The only issue here is that dumbbells can limit loading. Finding heavy enough dumbbells can be an issue if you are used to lifting a lot with a barbell. I personally have found that I can load my glutes the best with dumbbells and that I usually can find heavy enough dumbbells to challenge me sufficiently.
