What’s out of sight is often out of mind. One of the most difficult alignment pointers in Purvottanasana involves keeping the lower belly drawn in as the hips lift up and the head drops back. In order to support the elongation of the spine, draw the navel in and expand the chest with each inhalation.  To send the hips forward, avoid squeezing the butt and pushing the lower belly out. Instead, rotate the thighbones slightly inward, activate the quadriceps and engage the back muscles. To support the neck as it drops back internally, rotate the shoulders and allow the trapezius muscle to slightly elevate. This posture is important for building stamina, strength and flexibility. For a good Upward Facing Dog, avoid flattening the back, blocking the spinal extension, crunching the shoulders and neck and dropping the weight down.  Instead, press down through the shoulders, lift each of the joints of the spine up and out of the pelvic bowl, send the trapezius muscles a little forward to support the neck, engage the quadriceps to steady the legs, and gaze toward the nose.  Updog is a foundational backbend. Working for technique here sets up the body for deeper and healthier backbends throughout the practice. Holding Matsyasana, Fish Pose, will help build equal parts strength and flexibility. It’s important not to flatten the spine and overactivate the front body. Instead, make a nice arch and tuck the head under while extending the arms forward. Engaging the back muscles will help support the spine. Once the lotus position is stable, reach the knees to the ground. Breathe deeply and allow the subtle flow of energy to work in the body and mind. Hook the forearm and stabilize the legs as the first option. If this feels comfortable, place a block on the outside of the foot and guide the hand down. Consider removing the block and closing the gap between the torso and the thigh as the hand reaches all the way to the ground. Remember that the practice is not hierarchical or linear. So choose the option that works best to support the inner work of the posture rather than forcing the body into an external form.
