Many times when we find ourselves on the Berlin Turnpike, we stop in to @T-Swirl Crepe 📍Berlin, CT for a little treat! 😋 They specialize in Japanese style crepes, which are made with rice flour rather than wheat flour, making them gluten-free! You’ll find them to be crispy on the outside, but soft on the inside. They hold the fillings so well that you can skip the fork & knife and just take a bite, making it an easy on-the-go snack! @T-Swirl Crepe has so many flavors to choose from! On this visit, we went with their refreshing strawberry cheesecake crepe, as well as one of their newest flavors, dulce de leche! T-Swirl offers boba tea in addition to crepes, so we had their taro milk tea and strawberry banana slush. You can find T-Swirl nationwide, with CT locations in Berlin, Fairfield, New Haven, Middletown, and the Danbury Mall. You can also order delivery through UberEats and DoorDash! After the retirement of the former owner and world-renowned chef, Carole Peck, the restaurant has returned under a new owner with a fresh look. In 2020, she decided to take a bold step and turn the bar where she’d worked for years into her own, giving the space a fresh identity while maintaining its community feel. From menu items all named after popular songs to walls lined with pictures of memes, Sandra’s goal is simple: to create a space where everyone feels welcome and entertained. One of the last restaurants we visited in 2024 was @Romanacci! My mom and I stopped in for lunch while we were in the area and enjoyed a variety of Italian comfort foods. We went to their location in Norwalk, but you can also find them in Trumbull, Fairfield, the Westport Train Station, and at Westport’s Compo Beach as Old Mill Grocery & Deli by Romanacci. This family-owned business was opened by two brothers who pride themselves on making delicious food that’s made fresh daily using locally sourced ingredients. A few of the dishes we tried were even recent additions to the menu, and we were definitely happy with our meal. Open from Wednesday-Saturday 5pm-12am, we think this spot is perfect for pre-dinner bites and drinks, or as a late-night hang out. We’re closing out National Pizza Week with the results from Round 2 of our Naugatuck Pizza Wars! 🍕 Before we announce our results, we want to say that this was all in good fun as a winter activity with our friends & family. Pizza is very subjective & everyone’s opinions will be different! Having lived in town my whole life, I was curious to know what all the pizzerias were like & find my true favorite pizza in town. We hope this will encourage you all to do the same & support your local pizzerias! 🥁And with that, our favorite pizza in Naugatuck is…🥁 🏆 VINNY’S! 🏆 They actually were our go-to for years! When they moved buildings, we fell away from going mostly due to tough parking. We wish the appearance of the pizza itself was better (it was pretty bubbly), but they really nailed the flavor, crust, and sauce to cheese ratio. Compared to all of the pizzas, there was just no denying it had the best flavor in our opinion! 🥈 Second place goes to an underdog, A1! We had never tried them until last Friday. As the winner in round 1, they moved into round 2 and proved their consistency with another delicious pizza. Picture perfect, with pretty much no critiques - if they had slightly more flavor, they could’ve edged out Vinny’s for us. 🥉 Third place goes to Giuseppe’s! They are a childhood favorite of Colten’s. It was very tasty! Our only critique was on the crust, which we thought was plain. In our mid tier were New Hop Brook, Bellissimo, Mario’s, Luna, and The Hub. New Hop Brook & Bellissimo were both not bad at all, especially flavor-wise. We could definitely see ourselves ordering again. Mario’s was a bit greasy and had too much oregano - it almost had a smoky flavor? Luna and The Hub are both wood-fired, and while we typically like thin crust/New Haven style pizza, we found them to be a bit too charred for our liking and thought sauce to cheese ratios could’ve been better. Our least favorites were La Casa & Paesano’s. La Casa was unevenly cooked, being half burnt underneath and covered in bubbles. The sauce at Paesano’s was too sweet. We’ve been curious about Sitar in New Haven for years, so when we heard that they had remodeled and added a bunch of new menu items, we decided it was time to finally stop by! Indian food is one of Colten’s favorite cuisines, and it fit perfectly into our winter comfort food series 🥰 Since we were in the adventurous spirit, we tried two dishes we’ve never had before - malai chicken kebab and goat curry! We weren’t sure how we were going to feel about goat, but it was so good, and the way it was cooked reminded us of short rib! Sitar’s many is very diverse, with an emphasis on northern Indian cuisine. The restaurant has a perfect balance of maintaining tradition while also embracing a modern flair. Choose a cocktail to pair with your meal, or if you’re looking for a non-alcoholic drink, a mango lassi is always refreshing choice. These below freezing temps have us wishing we were somewhere warmer, so we visited @MofonGo Restaurant • CT for a taste of Puerto Rico right here in CT 🇵🇷☀️ We took a drive to Willimantic to check out their newest location, and we were impressed as always with their food! Their mofongo is made fresh to order, and the pernil was cooked perfectly. West Hartford’s newest restaurant, The Laurel is officially open starting today! 🎉 We visited during their pre-opening Friends & Family event on Monday, and all we can say is WOW! Owner & Chef Ashley Flagg, formerly of Millwright’s in Simsbury, truly impressed us with her incredible menu and delicious, locally-sourced food. We were excited to see so many unique options from around the world, and she nailed every single one that we tried. It’s nice to have a different tapas-style restaurant in the area, and the menu really reflects the owner’s talent as a chef while remaining unpretentious. Even the drinks were amazing, and the mocktail was one of the best I’ve had! Despite it being their first night open, the service was flawless. The ambiance is perfect for a date night, special event, or gathering with friends. Located in the former Corner Pug restaurant, the space has been beautifully transformed into The Laurel while maintaining the historical charm of the building. Did you know the @New York Islanders have their AHL affiliate team right here in CT? We went to a home game this past Saturday at Total Mortgage Arena for the Bridgeport Islanders and had a great time! Colten is a huge hockey fan, but this was actually the very first hockey game I’ve ever been to, and it was so fun to watch! It was Hometown Heroes night, with first responders from the greater Bridgeport area recognized for their courageous contributions to the community ❤️ Before the game, we enjoyed all you can eat pizza during the team’s Pucks & Pies event! We got to try slices from Bella Sera, The Original Vazzy’s, Dal Mare Pizzeria, and @Sally’s Apizza, which were all so good 🍕 We couldn’t resist some snacks from the concessions during the game, and we were impressed to even find @Crumbl cookies there! Tamales are one of my favorite foods, so I was really excited when I found out I could get them delivered to my doorstep thanks to Texas Tamale Company 😍 These are an easy-to-make meal that would be perfect as part of your New Year celebrations too! You don’t have to wait for them to ship - you could visit Price Chopper in Southington and Newington and find them in the frozen food aisle! We recommend steaming them for the best experience, but you can also heat them up quickly in the microwave. I had my parents over for lunch, and we all enjoyed their beef & chicken tamales, as well as their homestyle chili! If you’re passing through Stamford on the Merritt Parkway, Mish Mosh Deli is an easy stop for breakfast, sandwiches, and even pizza! We had a nice lunch there and even browsed the shelves of their market for snacks and more! They’re open Fridays 7:30am-7pm and Monday-Thursday & Saturday 7:30-4pm.
