Did my pouch stretch? The dreaded question. As your new pouch expands after surgery it may seem like you can eat a lot more than you used. The pouch can usually handle around 1 cup of food at a time about 1 year after surgery. But it also depends on the types of food being eaten If someone asks me if it’s possible for the stomach to stretch after surgery (more than expected), I tell them yes but it is not common. Here is what I would suggest doing if you are concerned that your stomach has stretched. 1) Make sure you are eating protein first. This may help signal to the brain earlier that you are satisfied. 2) Eat 3-5 oz protein per meal. Make sure at least half of your portion sizes are protein. If you do this it helps to stick to the 1 cup portion sizes. 3) Don’t drink fluids with meals. Alright, out of all these recommendations this one has the least amount of science behind it but it is believed the liquid helps liquify your food faster so the food contents can empty from your the stomach faster. Hence, being able to eat more and being hungrier sooner. It’s worth doing if you are concerned. 4) Avoid slider foods. These foods such as crackers, chips, or ice cream tend to be calorie dense but don’t fill you up so you can eat a lot. You will likely be able to eat more than a cup portion of these foods. 5) Journaling helps you learn so much about your body. Keep track of what you are and how your hunger level felt afterwards. Maybe certain food combination keep you fuller longer. Plus, this journal will come handy for your surgery team to review. Schedule an appointment with your surgery team. If you have tried all of the above suggestions and they don’t help then it may be helpful to see your surgery team. They can order tests to make sure everything is in working order.
